Learning Preferences

Multiple Intelligences (Internal)

The purpose of learning about intelligence preference is to help you think about the way you think (metacognition) and understand the best ways for you to study for your college classes. Everybody has a capable brain and can be successful in college, AND everyone processes information in a unique way. In other words – everyone is smart, but it’s important to discover HOW you are smart.

The Multiple Intelligences Theory shows us that there are eight different ways that people process information. We all learn in each of these eight ways, but our brains are predisposed to prefer one or more of the intelligence types over others.
Each are equally intelligent and important; they are just different. We are born with certain intelligence preferences; this is not something we can change. But, it’s important to be aware of all the different types. This will increase our chances for successful learning, and help us understand the way others think and learn.

The 8 types of intelligences that Howard defined were:

1. Linguistic and verbal intelligence: good with words.

2. Logical intelligence: good with math and logic.

3. Visual/Spatial intelligence: good with pictures and space.

4. Kinesthetic intelligence: good with activities.

5. Musical intelligence: good with rhythm.

6. Interpersonal intelligence: good with communication.

7. Intrapersonal intelligence: good with analyzing things.

8. Naturalist intelligence: good with understanding the natural world.

Learning Styles
(External)

The way you study is not the same as the kinds of intelligence you possess. You can use different approaches to learning a subject that will appeal to your intelligence. For instance, when studying biology, some students might prefer to listen to lectures or work in discussion groups. Others will prefer to view movies and documentaries, or illustrations provided by the teacher on a smart board. Some students find they become more interested when doing lab work and field study. All of these methods are good, if they work for you.

When you understand the multiple intelligences and your particular brain preferences, and you are aware of different learning styles to help you study for your college courses, you become in charge of your own learning. You can be successful in all of your classes, even for subjects with which you’ve always had trouble. Take the recommended assessments to find our what your intelligence preference and learning style so that you can finally take control of your own learning!!!

Here are the 4 differenent types of Learning Styles you may have:

1. Visual-learning by seeing

2. Aural (by ear)-learning by hearing

3. Read/Write-learning by reading or writing

4. Kinesthetic-learning by doing

5. Mulitmodal-a mix of all of the above
